The Nevada Conservation League (NCL) is the independent political voice of Nevada’s conservation community. We work to maintain and enhance the natural character of Nevada, and the quality of life for Nevadans through effective advocacy, the election of pro-conservation candidates, and building collaboration.
A Nevada where all can thrive because they have access to a healthy climate, clean energy, clean water, public lands and parks, as well as safe, healthy, and sustainable communities.
As the political voice of Nevada’s conservation community, NCL works to protect our climate, air, water, land, and health by translating conservation values into political and policy priorities that we actively promote so all Nevada’s communities can thrive.
We recognize that certain communities are disproportionately impacted by environmental degradation and climate disruption and at all levels of our work, we seek more environmentally just outcomes. We strive to do all of our work in a way that recognizes and builds a deeper understanding of issues of racial and social justice and in a way that builds a more inclusive organization.
The organization was officially established in 2001 and intended to be a political voice for the environmental community to hold elected officials accountable for their environmental records and to promote the election of pro-environment candidates. The first notable project of NCL was the organization’s 2003 Conservation Scorecard, which provides information about critical environmental legislation considered and votes taken during Nevada state legislative sessions. The Conservation Scorecard would continue to be a project of the organization to this day.
NCL has evolved much since the early 2000s, with a stronger dedication to organizing and mobilizing local communities in the environmental movement.
Since its founding, the organization has always prioritized climate change, clean energy, public lands, and the protection of public spaces. Throughout history, NCL has a strong track record of working with partner organizations and community members on the following issues:
We can attribute the organization’s founding to Grace Portori, the first Executive Director of the organization, and Kaitlin Backlund. We also recognize other influential leaders including Robert Buntjer, Bob Fulkerson, Ed Zuckerman, and Norm Harry for their contributions to the organization’s development.
