LAS VEGAS — Today, advocates and local organizations came together to discuss the recently passed H.R. 1 reconciliation bill, also known as the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’. Speakers highlighted how the measure will impact Nevadans, who will face potential tightening of Medicaid and SNAP eligibility due to major cuts in the Republican-backed bill.
Tick Segerblom, County Commissioner for District E, issued the following statement:
“As you know, almost a million people are currently on Medicaid in Nevada. Almost 450,000 people are receiving SNAP. I’m here on behalf of the County to say that those people, once they’re impacted, they come to us, and so we’re going to feel the ultimate pinch, which means that the residents of Clark County are going to feel that ultimate pinch, because money is going to be short. We’re holding our breath right now to see exactly how much money we’re going to lose, but we know it’s going to be a substantial amount of money. This bill is terrible. It’s helping billionaires and going to hurt everyday citizens of Clark County.”
Kristee Watson, Executive Director, Nevada Conservation League, issued the following statement:
“I want to be really honest this morning, if Republican leaders thought that this bill was going to be popular, they would not have jammed it through Congress, trying to hide what’s actually in the bill. This bill gets health care, it slashes food assistance, and it hands billions to polluters. At the same time, the rest of us pay the price. A recent report published this week found that in Nevada, households will see an increase of $300 in their energy bills by 2030, and $320 by 2035. $300 is a lot of money. It’s groceries for a week, it’s your car insurance payment, it’s medical bills, it’s prescriptions, and we’re all going to be paying more and getting less, all because Republicans wanted to pass an extreme agenda. Nevadans deserve better. That’s why senators Cortez Masto and Rosen, and Reps. Titus, Horsford, and Lee all voted no on this bill. They knew that this bill was sabotaging the progress we’ve made in our state, and they knew that Nevada families were going to be negatively impacted.”
Dr. Joanne Leovy, Nevada Clinicians for Climate Action, issued the following statement:
“This big bad bill, H.R. 1, uses a false guise of accountability to strip Medicaid from hundreds of 1000s of Nevadans, most of whom already work or are unable to work. It limits Nevada’s ability to collect revenue to support Medicaid, resulting in a $437 million loss in federal Medicaid revenue for our state by 2031. This will force cuts in health services that will affect all of us. Medicaid dependent hospital services like maternity wards and neonatal ICUs will likely close, and a flux of newly uninsured patients will again flock to emergency rooms, causing treatment delays for everyone, and those costs will be passed on to insured people in the form of painfully higher health care bills.”
Yolanda Kemp, AFSCME Local 4041 member, issued the following statement:
“Every day, I help working families figure out how they’re going to make it through another day, and I help Nevadans apply for SNAP. And every single time someone qualifies, you can see the relief light up in their face. Even if it’s just a little support, it can help families make up for what they can’t cover with their jobs. Cuts to SNAP will hurt the families you may know, the seniors in your neighborhood, the single-parent family who lives next door, your coworkers, maybe even your children’s teachers or coaches. So many more cuts to public services also mean our jobs as state employees are on the line. Let me tell you, the big, beautiful bill that is supposed to help hard-working Americans is nothing more than another billionaire giveaway paid for by us, hard-working families, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet. AFSCME members will continue fighting for our communities because we are proud of the difference we make in our communities.”
