NV Energy Ordered to Refund $63 Million in Overcharges to Customers

Impacted customers will now receive reimbursement for years of being billed incorrectly

NEVADA – Today, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada took action to require NV Energy to refund $63 million in overcharges, resolving its investigation into decades of improper billing. For tens of thousands of Nevada families who were overcharged, this outcome represents long-overdue accountability.

“This is the right thing to do for customers, but it should never have taken this long. It shouldn’t have taken a full regulatory investigation, and it shouldn’t have taken the passage of AB452 to require the utility to pay customers back. Customers should never have to discover billing errors themselves or fight to be made whole,” said Kristee Watson, Executive Director of the Nevada Conservation League. “It took sustained public pressure and legislative action to ensure accountability. While this settlement is a positive step forward, the harm experienced by customers over many years can’t simply be erased. Moving forward, NV Energy must do better. Transparency and putting customers first must be the standard, not the exception.”

The decision resolves the investigation and provides a clear path for refunds. It also comes weeks before NV Energy plans to implement its new daily demand charge on April 1st, a billing change that could increase costs for residential customers. Imposing new charges while the utility continues addressing billing errors risks confusion and additional strain on household budgets. This underscores the need for stronger oversight and a utility culture that prioritizes customer protection from the start.
