As Nevada Conservation League Celebrates Our Successes At The 83rd Legislative Session, We Set Our Eyes Towards The Future

CARSON CITY –  Nevada Conservation League thanks the legislators, the governor, and the hundreds of Nevadans who supported our policy priorities during the 83rd Nevada Legislative Session — five of our policies were signed into law in early June.

It is through the small actions of everyday people that change is made — changes like ensuring utility monopolies like NV Energy fully refund any overcharges, that children can learn in the outdoors, that affordable housing residents can have solar panels installed to lower energy bills, and that we can learn more about wildlife migratory patterns to understand better where and when we need to place wildlife crossings, preventing car accidents and protecting wildlife.

The legislative process is most fruitful when everyday heroes participate — like the 1,337 Nevadans who signed our petitions, 42 Nevadans who lobbied their legislators on Conservation Lobby Day, and the countless Nevadans who joined us on this journey.

While SB 417, which allows major rate-setting decisions for gas utilities to take place outside of general rate cases, also passed, we know that we can counter the impacts as an organization with a large, engaged membership. Nevada Conservation League will continue its work to reduce Nevada’s reliance on fossil fuels and push back on policies that increase costs for our friends, families, and neighbors.

“The Nevada Conservation League knows that Democracy is a verb, and this past legislative session, we have seen it in action — we witnessed firsthand how Nevadans fought alongside us for a healthier, more prosperous future,” Kristee Watson, executive director of the Nevada Conservation League, said. “Today, we celebrate that win. And our work isn’t over. We set our eyes towards a better future. A future that centers around the freedom to enjoy our great outdoors, to hold the powerful, like NV Energy, accountable, to protect Nevadans and wildlife, and most importantly, to protect our Democracy that allows this work to be done.”
